Stakeholder Discussion Topic: ENVIRONMENTAL “MARKETING PLAN"
ENVIRONMENTAL “MARKETING PLAN. An environmental “marketing plan” could be developed to help the watershed advertise the benefits and uniqueness of the Elk Headwaters. This would help bring state and national attention to the importance of protecting the local environment. Additionally, developing the idea of researching the historical and cultural significance of the area. Discovering new features and facts about the watershed. This new information can be used to advance the cause of the local community. Some initial ideas: - Super-clean water is an amenity - Elk headwaters is a geographic area, not just water resources - Whittaker falls is important, premier swimming hole in state, should be included in the Elk headwaters area, makes for a nice boundary - Talk about the history - The CWP needs to keep in mind the people lower in the watershed, not just the headwaters, need to look at the Elk Springs section, including the hatchery and the fishing lodge. - “Brand” the area. Economic development and tourism, more than trout. - Community sustained in a healthy manner - Abandoned railroad grade for rail-trail. Recreational access. From Spruce to Bergoo. Good for family recreation. Railroad grade has interesting history including Water Tank Hollow and “The Big Cut” is where the first steam shovel was used. - An inventory would help give perspective |

I think the rail trail idea is excellent. The area alredy has some pre-eminent biking trails with Elk River Touring Center, Snowshoe and the Greenbrier River Trail. The development of the Spruce-Bergoo line would undoubtedly be an additional tourist draw with it's positive economic impact. I believe the timing is also good in that federal funds for such construction will likely be available with the stimulus. Also, the current economic state will keep people closer to home and we are quite close to the major metro areas. |
