Welcome
Welcome to the Elk Headwaters Watershed Association. Our mission is to improve the quality of the Elk River watershed through education, conservation, and responsible use of its resources. As an organization, we seek to act responsibly on issues that affect the quality and sustainability of the resources of the watershed.
The Elk Headwaters Watershed Association is concerned with the entire drainage area of the Upper Elk River. These waters support a reproducing wild trout population, as well as an aquatic insect population whose diversity and proportions are legendary. The mountain slopes in the region produce some of the finest hardwoods in the world, and provide unlimited mountain-based recreation on private lands and within the Monongahela National Forest.
The Elk Headwaters watershed spans 85,044 acres, and encompasses all the land and water that drains into the Elk River. Beginning with the major tributaries of Big Spring Fork and Old Field Fork in the headwaters, the watershed extends from Pocahontas County through Randolph County, and meanders to Bergoo in Webster County.
The Elk Headwaters Watershed Association was formed in March of 2003. Organized by a diverse group with a common goal, participants share a worthy vision of maintaining and improving the unique natural resources of the watershed. Our group includes and welcomes cooperation from foresters, fishermen and local residents, as well as recreationalists, developers, and farmers. Working together, we hope to protect and improve the quality of the Elk Headwaters while maintaining the economic vitality of the community.
